What to see in Suvereto and its surroundings

Itineraries, villages, beaches, trekking and bike excursions directly from our farmhouse.

Suvereto Borgo Mediovale - Le Germandine

Suvereto

It is one of the most charming medieval villages in Tuscany: a gem whose origins date back to before the year 1000. Its name derives from the Latin suber, "cork": it is no coincidence that the hills surrounding it are still covered in cork oak forests and Mediterranean scrub.

As you stroll through cobbled alleys, ancient walls, churches, and cloisters, you breathe in an atmosphere suspended in time.

The 13th-century Town Hall, the Aldobrandesca Fortress, the Cloister of San Francesco and the Parish Church of San Giusto are worth a visit.

Suvereto has been awarded the Touring Club's Orange Flag, is one of Italy's Most Beautiful Villages, is a Slow City, and is a City of Wine and Oil.

From our farmhouse you have direct access to paths immersed in greenery, which can be explored on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback.

The strategic location of the Germandine allows you to explore art, nature, the sea, and villages without having to travel far.

Here are some ideas to make your vacation special.

Active life and excursions

An 80 km network of trails starts directly from the farm, perfect for trekking, mountain biking, or scenic walks.

The 18 trails, recently cleaned and marked, are collected on a map that you will find at the farmhouse.

To discover them all in preview, visit the Suvereto Trekking website.

Villages to live in

Around Suvereto are some of the most beautiful historic villages in Tuscany.

The castles and fortresses, the stone-paved streets, the ancient walls and evocative views will captivate you with their ancient charm.

Here are the ones you shouldn't miss:

Campiglia Marittima, Sassetta, Massa Marittima and of course the famous Bolgheri and Castagneto Carducci.

If you're looking for hidden spots to eat Tuscan delicacies or drink a good glass of wine, or want to visit the artisan workshops that bring the area to life, just ask and we'll recommend the ones that really make our hearts skip a beat.

Scent of the sea

If you want to take a dip in the sea, from Germandine you can reach some of Tuscany's most beautiful beaches in about 30 minutes by car.

The Etruscan Coast offers a wide variety of landscapes: from vast expanses of golden sand to wilder rocky stretches, from shady pine forests to crystalline waters that gently slope towards the open sea.

Sterpaia Park is ideal if you're looking for soft beaches, shallow waters, and crystal-clear waters, perfect for children too.

If you're looking for a more "wild" location, head to Buca delle Fate: panoramic cliffs and a bay where you can relax to the sound of the waves. To fully enjoy the tranquility of the place, we recommend avoiding weekends and visiting in spring, June, and September.

Rimigliano, in the municipality of San Vincenzo, can be reached by walking through a forest of holm oaks and pines that provides shelter from the sun even on the hottest days: a shaded path that opens onto a long, pristine beach.

And then there's the Gulf of Baratti, a place that always leaves something in our hearts: maritime pines that trace the line of the sky, golden sand, Etruscan ruins just steps from the sea, and the village of Populonia that guards the marvelous nature from above.

The cheerful soul of Suvereto and the Val di Cornia

Want to immerse yourself in local traditions? Well, you just have to choose: would you prefer a festival where you can enjoy local dishes, or would you rather enjoy a concert while sipping a cold craft beer?

In Suvereto in August, we recommend you don't miss Calici di Stelle: a magical event celebrating the night of San Lorenzo, August 10th. Fine wine, food tastings, live music, artistic performances, and wine-based cocktails.

And in Campiglia, there's Apriti Borgo, an arts and theater festival that transforms the historic center into a vast open-air stage, held every year during the week of Ferragosto. Street theater, circus, music, and folklore performances enliven the squares and alleyways with their cheerfulness.

And if you visit us in December, to experience the area like a true Suvereto native, the Sagra del Cinghiale (Wild Boar Festival) awaits you. This festival has been held for almost 60 years, a true fixture for the residents of Suvereto and the entire Val di Cornia. The event celebrates the excellence of the area's typical food and wine products: wine, oil, wild boar meat, and game prepared according to ancient recipes. And if you prefer vegetarian dishes, you can enjoy one of the famous hot zonzelle (fried dumplings) made here: they're enormous!

They're not what you call them: coccoli, fried dumplings. In any case, they're delicious.
